For CPAs, engineers, architects, brokers and other licensed practices

Practicing on an expired license isn't a paperwork problem. It's a disciplinary one.

The board's letter is polite. It notes that the license expired on the 31st, that work was signed under it on the 4th, and that the matter has been referred. There is a fee, then a reinstatement, then a line on the public license lookup that every prospective client and every future licensing board in every other state can read. The renewal notice had gone to an old email address.

What runs out, and on what clock

The license itself
One to three-year cycles that differ by state and by profession, and one license per state you practice in. Multi-state practices run a dozen clocks.
Continuing education
CPE, PDH, CE — hours per cycle, sometimes with required subjects, sometimes with a reporting deadline separate from the renewal date.
Professional liability insurance
Claims-made policies cover claims made while the policy is in force. A gap in coverage can leave prior work unprotected unless tail coverage is bought.
Firm-level registrations
A firm permit or registration separate from the individual licenses, often with its own renewal and its own designated licensee.
Notary commissions, certifications, memberships
Notary commissions on their own multi-year cycle; specialty certifications and professional memberships with dues and CE of their own.

What it costs when one of them lapses

  • Late fees, reinstatement and, where work was performed on an expired license, a disciplinary record that is public.
  • Contracts and signed deliverables called into question for the period the license was lapsed.
  • A coverage gap that leaves prior work uninsured when a claim arrives.
  • Losing the ability to sign, seal or file until the license is restored.

What Lapseline does about it

Drop in the PDF or a phone photo; Lapseline reads the dates
Expiry date, issue date, issuer, holder and the certificate number are extracted from the document. Scans are OCR'd on our own servers and sensitive numbers are redacted before any AI model sees the text.
You confirm, then it reminds you — at 90, 60, 30 and 7 days, and once more if it lapses
Every extracted date carries a confidence score and is tracked only after you confirm it. Renew a document and the whole reminder cycle re-arms for the new date.
Every licensee in the firm on one dashboard
Each license, CE certificate and policy is its own item with its own holder. Invite the office manager or a partner as a teammate so the dates are not in one person's inbox.
Every Federal Register document is checked against your profile
About a hundred documents a day. Describe your business once — industry, keywords, the agencies and CFR parts that regulate you — and the rules, proposed rules and notices that match it appear on your Regulations page with a one-line reason.

An assistant, not a guarantee: every date is shown with a confidence score and tracked only after you confirm it, and renewals are still verified with the issuer.

Questions people in this trade ask

Does it count my CE hours?
Not as a ledger. It tracks the certificates you upload and the reporting deadline you set, and reminds you before it. Counting hours against the board's categories is still done with the board's system.
Does it know each state board's rules?
No. It tracks the dates on your documents, whichever board issued them, and reminds you; the rules themselves you confirm with the board.
Do I have to type the dates in by hand?
Only if you want to. Upload the certificate as a PDF or a photo and the dates, issuer and number are extracted for you to confirm. You can also add a deadline by hand — a bid due date, a renewal you have not received the paper for yet — and it joins the same reminder schedule.
Are the renewal cycles on this page exact for my state?
No. Cycles differ by state, county and issuer, and they change. The values here are the common federal or typical ones, quoted to show how many separate clocks a business runs on. Lapseline tracks whatever date is on the document you upload; confirm the rule itself with the issuer.
Does Lapseline guarantee I will never lapse?
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Lapseline is an assistant: it reads your documents, shows you every date with a confidence score, tracks what you confirm, and reminds you on a schedule. Renewing is still your job, and you should verify renewals with the issuer.
